Our Brief History about how Reedem Christian Church of God Emanated
In July 1909, a son was born into the Akindayomi family of Ondo State, Nigeria. Despite growing up among idol worshippers, he sensed a higher power and sought to know “The God who created the earth and everyone on it.” This quest led him to the Church Missionary Society, where he was baptized in 1927. However, still spiritually unfulfilled, he joined the Cherubim and Seraphim church in 1931.
While there, he began hearing a voice proclaiming, “You will be my servant.” Despite his initial resistance, after seven years of failed business ventures and mounting debts, he found himself dependent on God’s grace. This marked the beginning of a profound relationship with God. Broken, he yielded, saying, “Lord, I will go wherever you want me to go,” seeking confirmation through Bible passages.
In 1941, he married and continued worshiping with the Cherubim and Seraphim. By 1947, he sensed a departure from the true Word of God in the church and, by 1952, decided to leave. Initiating a house fellowship called the Glory of God Fellowship in Willoughby Street, Lagos, the group rapidly grew due to reported miracles.
In a supernatural vision, Akindayomi saw words on a blackboard: “The Redeemed Christian Church of God.” Despite being illiterate, he wrote these words, and God conveyed that the church would reach the ends of the earth. God established a covenant, mirroring the Abrahamic covenant, promising to meet the church’s needs abundantly if members served faithfully. Thus, the Redeemed Christian Church of God was born in 1952.
Meetings initially occurred at 9 Willoughby Street until the church acquired land, relocating to its present site at 1-5 Redemption Way, Ebute-Metta, Lagos. In the early ’70s, God revealed Akindayomi’s successor, Enoch Adejare Adeboye, who joined in 1973 and became a pastor in 1975.
As Akindayomi prepared to meet his Creator, he shared details of the covenant and plans with Pastor Adeboye. After Akindayomi’s death at 71, Pastor Adeboye, despite prior revelations, was officially appointed as his successor.
Since 1981, the Redeemed Christian Church of God has experienced explosive growth, with over 2000 parishes in Nigeria and a global presence spanning Africa, Europe, the United States, and the Caribbean. Notably, the Holy Ghost Service, an all-night miracle service, draws hundreds of thousands worldwide every month. Today, the Redeemed Christian Church of God continues to witness remarkable deeds globally.
